The United States is undertaking a comprehensive assessment of its natural lands, waterways, and wildlife in an effort to better understand and protect its biodiversity. This nationwide nature assessment, known as the National Nature Assessment, is the first of its kind and aims to provide valuable insights for researchers and policymakers to determine the most effective strategies for preserving habitats and species throughout the country.
The director of the project, Phil Levin from the University of Washington, presented the goal of the report at the Ecological Society of America annual conference. The primary objective is to evaluate and document the current state of nature and its benefits. By quantifying the country’s biodiversity and predicting potential changes due to climate change, the assessment will include data on various plant and animal species, as well as accounts from communities about their experiences with environmental changes and the significance of specific species and places in their lives.
In addition to assessing the status of natural resources such as waterways, lands, and wildlife, the report will also assign economic, social, and cultural values to these resources. For instance, forests not only offer recreational opportunities but also help mitigate climate change by capturing carbon dioxide. Similarly, coral reefs serve as protective barriers for coastal areas and support vital fishing industries.
The importance of conducting this nature assessment stems from the alarming decline in global biodiversity. Since 1970, the global population of vertebrate species has decreased by 68%, revealing a biodiversity crisis that requires urgent attention. As Jane Lubchenco, the deputy director for climate and environment at the US White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, emphasizes, while many scientists recognize this crisis, the rest of the world often overlooks it.
The report is currently in its early developmental stages and is expected to be released in 2026. Inspired by the National Climate Assessment, which assesses the impact of climate change on the United States, the nature assessment aims to inform policy decisions without mandating changes. It will provide vital information and insights for policymakers while allowing them the flexibility to determine how best to utilize the report’s findings.
This survey marks a significant step forward in understanding and safeguarding the nation’s natural wonders and resources, ultimately contributing to the conservation and preservation of biodiversity in the United States.
