Observe a Robotic Cockroach’s Journey Through a Maze

A team of researchers from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has developed a new method to control cockroaches through electronic backpack-like devices. Unlike previous experiments that required invasive surgeries in which electrodes were implanted directly into the cockroach’s nervous system, this new method is non-invasive and does not cause harm to the insect.

The new technology consists of flexible electronic sleeves made of gold and plastic that slip onto the cockroach’s antennae. These sleeves are fixed in place with ultraviolet light, similar to shrink-wrap plastic. The antennae electrodes are used for steering, while a third electrode attached to the cockroach’s stomach can control its speed.

By using these electronic sleeves, the researchers were able to guide the cockroach through an S-shaped track and an obstacle course made of random stones. The cockroach’s antennae remained undamaged and functional while wearing the sleeves, allowing it to navigate the course and receive instructions from the researchers via Bluetooth.

The potential applications of this technology are wide-ranging. It could be used for building inspections, search-and-rescue missions, security purposes, and hazardous infrastructure inspection.

This new method allows for longer operation times, potentially for hours or even days, compared to previous techniques that only worked for minutes or hours. Additionally, it eliminates the need for invasive surgeries, reducing the risk of harming the cockroach and increasing its usability in various scenarios.

Overall, this research opens up new possibilities for the use of cyborg insects in practical situations and brings us closer to a world where we can harness the natural abilities of these creatures for our benefit.
