Pluto May Have a Supervolcano That Erupts Ice

A photo of Pluto taken by NASA's New Horizons mission

A supervolcano on Pluto, similar in size to the one in Yellowstone National Park, may have erupted and released ice across the dwarf planet’s surface within the last few million years. This discovery comes from an analysis of a crater identified by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft.

When New Horizons reached Pluto in 2015, images revealed the presence of ice volcanoes on the dwarf planet. These volcanoes are believed to expel chunks of frozen water instead of traditional lava.
