Flatworms: Regeneration or Reproduction?

Planarians, a type of flatworm, may face a trade-off between regeneration and reproduction. Different species of planarians have been found to rely on the same gene signalling pathway to either regrow lost body parts or produce eggs. By turning this pathway on or off, planarians can switch between these two functions. This discovery sheds light on the age-old question of why some animals can regenerate while others cannot.

The idea of a trade-off between regeneration and reproduction has been a topic of interest in the field of regeneration for a long time. Jochen Rink, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, explains that this is not a new question.
