THESE beautiful photos present starlings swirling and swooping as one in dramatic, cloud-like flocks often called murmurations. Shot by Søren Solkær, higher recognized for portraits of the likes of Björk and Paul McCartney, they’re from a brand new assortment of his images.

As a toddler rising up in southern Denmark close to the Wadden Sea, Solkær had been entranced by starling murmurations. Returning years later, he witnessed a big group of those birds being attacked by a peregrine falcon. “The shapes and formations the flock created, to be able to scare off the attacking hen of prey, blew my thoughts – stunning, dramatic and resembling a Japanese ink drawing or a bit of calligraphy,” he says.

After three years capturing the phenomenon, often called “black solar” in Denmark, he expanded the challenge to different elements of Europe. Proven in the primary picture is Black Solar #145, taken above Rome’s Piazza Venezia from a close-by rooftop. Transferring clockwise, Black Solar #50, above, was taken in Glastonbury, UK, whereas under is Black Solar #230, photographed in Sardinia, Italy, early one morning because the birds left their roost.

“I imagine that patterns in nature communicate to us human beings on a deep, common stage,” says Solkær. “There’s pleasure and recognition once we expertise these pure kinds. To me, they appear to kind a form of language that I imagine many individuals can relate to. Finally, I’m hoping to encourage a deeper reference to nature – and to ourselves.”

These photos characteristic in his new ebook Starling, a sequel to Black Solar. Solkær’s images are on present on the National Nordic Museum, Seattle, till 10 March.
